Serenity – Movie Review

Serenity

Four Stars ****

The Poster    I was invited to the Preview of Serenity on Tuesday September 27, 2005.

Having not seen but two of the TV shows this movie is based on, and the two I saw, where not very satisfying, I was hoping the movie would stand on it’s own (because I don’t know  about the plot) and build the characters for me so when I return to the show, (Waiting for me on TiVo) I would have some ideas of what it is about.

   I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED.

This was a very good movie. I learned to love the characters in short order.  The plot is good. The actions are GREAT and the special effects are all there.

Serenity, is not a high drama like a StarWars.  It’s more of a made for TV movie like StarTrek Next Gen.  But it is FUN.  This is the kind of movie I’d love to return to every few months for the next installment.

The film is based on Whedon’s critically acclaimed, short-lived television series Firefly, which aired on the FOX TV Network during the fall of 2002. Set in a futuristic, post-Earth universe dominated by a planetary Alliance, the series chronicled the adventures of the ragtag spaceship Serenity and her eclectic crew of outcasts, led by Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds, played by NATHAN FILLION. Although FOX TV cancelled the show after only 11 of the 14 produced episodes had aired, Firefly’s quirky mix of humor, complex characters and sci-fi had attracted a loyal and passionate following.

As a SciFi nut, I’ll go see anything. But I’m hoping, and expecting this should be good. If the fans of the FOX show pushed to put the show back on TV and got his movie made there must be something to it. I have seen the TV show but I have yet to “Get into it”. The mix of six shooters and space ships kind of put me off and I haven’t gotten into the characters yet. I’ve only seen two shows so that not really enough to judge. So come back and read this reveiw after tonight. I will have lots more to say about the movie.
